The sixth and last Sunday of Lent and beginning of Holy Week, a Sunday of the highest rank.

Today in church, Palms are given away to the parishioner (church goer). If you were out on the streets and noticed that some people were holding branches of palms, then they are most probably Catholics who have just received the palm during Sunday Mass. We will then put the palm infront of a holy image, on the top of our house door, or even in our car. It is a simple reminder of Jesus Christ's truimphant entry into Jerusalem, which was followed by his death and glorious resurrection.

The significance of giving out palms dates back to bilbical times when the dove brought back the olive branch to Noah's ark and to the multitude greeting Our Lord; they say that the branches of palms signify victory over the prince of death and the olive the advent of spiritual unction through Christ.

During Jesus's time, palm signified victory and joy. After 40 days of wilderness, Jesus finally went back to Jerusalem. Although he was severely tempted during these 40 days, he prayed, persisted, persevered and didn't let God down. His triumphant return to Jerusalem was welcomed by the community, who spread out palm branches and clothes before him.

Let me continue to walk in faith during this Holy Week and the rest of my life. Father, in times of temptation, help me to persevere and resist them. I know it is not easy, but may the Holy Spirit be there to help me conquer them. For the rewards in heaven is in abundance. Amen!
